I explored these concepts through nature by taking clients into vast remote mountain ranges and wilderness areas; and through culture with filmmaking and photography. Due to a lack of income, I’m currently trapped on the sixth floor of a non-descript apartment block in suburban Pretoria – for the past two years. As filmmaker I’ve been unable to fund my projects since I came from the USA to make a feature film in SA, 16 years ago. The theme of these feature, short film, theatre & documentary projects is the concept of Home. The Lockdown triggered a renewed aesthetic response to our Inside/Outside current dilemma. As author I try to minimise my contribution to the creative process, preferring to record a moment, instead of creating an image through a process of capturing and editing These images can be seen as ranging from inner landscapes to conceptual pieces. What they have in common are that none of the scenes were staged, and that the images were not manipulated (relatively speaking to traditional film practices). I wasn’t looking for images, but recognised metaphors at unexpected moments, which I then recorded with the gear at hand. The photographs were taken with a mobile phone and full-frame DSLR. Photography seems to be a suitable medium to interpret the “realness” of the Virus. Throughout the years, I travelled extensively and recorded exotic cultures or individuals living on the margins of Western consumerist society. Now, in order to extract some meaning from this Lockdown limbo, I chose to focus on the adjacent generic apartment block – tiny figures moving in the rear corridors and staircases. I had to zoom in to create portraits of individuals – culminating into a portrait of another monument to Brutalism.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” gradient_type=”default” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_gallery type=”flickity_static_height_style” images=”553,556,555,554,557″ flickity_spacing=”5px” flickity_controls=”pagination” flickity_overflow=”hidden” flickity_wrap_around=”wrap” flickity_box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” onclick=”link_no”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
